Coaching notes.
Better contact. Better control. More shots you can use on the course. Practical reading to help you get more from a lesson with John.
John’s approach
Work with your natural swing. Improve the strike and impact, then use the flight of the ball to judge the change. John’s focus is on the shots you need to play.
Before your first lesson
You don’t need to fix your swing before asking for help. Start with the shot you want to improve, or tell John you’re completely new to golf.
What to tell John, useful questions to ask, and the practical details for a lesson at Thurgoona.
Watch the ball
Where did it start? Which way did it curve? How did the strike feel? Those are different questions, and separating them gives you a clearer picture of a shot.
A plain guide to start direction, curve and contact, and why one bad shot doesn’t explain your whole swing.
Shots you can use
Choose a useful height and shape, and give your swing a clear task. Start with a familiar flight, then build an option for a situation you face on the course.
Understand the slice
Start direction, curve and contact help describe a recurring miss. Learn why two balls that finish on the same side of the target can need different attention.
Practice between lessons
Take your lesson focus to the range, practise towards a target and bring useful observations back to John. A suggested session structure gives you somewhere to start.
Work on your game
John’s coaching works with your natural swing, with the focus on impact and the shots you want to hit. A lesson gives you the chance to connect these ideas to your own game.
Private lessons are on the undercover range at Thurgoona Country Club Resort, Albury. No membership needed. $100 an hour, or $80 an hour for juniors under 16.
